Time Warner Cable Offers Free Slingbox, Irks Programmers

Time Warner Cable recently announced that they will fully subsidize (via rebate) the $300 cost of a Slingbox for new customers of their Wideband Internet service. The set-top box allows users to stream what plays on their home television to other televisions, computers, mobile devices and tablets–a good deal for the consumer, but sure to rankle certain cable programmers with whom TWC has been feuding. Google Buys SageTV

SageTV, a company known for services that “help create and control your media center from multiple devices,” has been acquired by Google. The obvious speculation is over which functionalities will be snapped up by Google for their own multimedia efforts within Google TV and, possibly, Google cloud services. Google TV currently lacks native DVR capability–a service offered by SageTV–so there’s that possibility. READ MORE »
