If you are a socially savvy business traveler like Shaun Koiner, the first thing you do when you land is scan the e-mails you received while in transit, check-in on Facebook and Foursquare as you deplane, and look for breaking news on Twitter as you ride to your destination. “I check-in to keep a digital trail of where I’ve been and to stay socially connected,” says Koiner, director of digital marketing for Sporting News. “Use of, and keeping up-to-date on social platforms is an integral part of my job.” He travels about five times a month between New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and the editorial headquarters for Sporting News in Charlotte, North Carolina. A new round of venture financing has netted location-sharing app builder Foursquare an additional $50 million, putting the company’s current valuation around $600 million. The fund raising, in the works since March, was supported by original investors O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Union Square Ventures, as well as others such as Spark Capital. Foursquare CEO and one of the founders of the company, Dennis Crowley, says that the money will be used for expanding its employee roster, particularly overseas as the company is “seeing huge international pick-up.” READ MORE

A new service from the social platform Meebo lets users check in when they visit their favorite websites. Meebo is a social platform that lets users follow each other around the Web and share the content they’re viewing. Monday through Wednesday in New York City TechCrunch is holding its Disrupt Battlefield competition in which hopeful founders and entrepreneurs submit their young, unseen start-up companies for the opportunity to try winning the $50,000 prize while launching in front of an all-star panel made up of innovators, angel investors, venture capitalists and tech influencers.
