Internet Slowed to a Crawl? It May Be Your Power Company’s Fault

In Maine, about 250 households found their Internet stopped working correctly after Maine Central Power installed smart meters. Smart meters, widely in use all over the country, automatically send word to the power company when there’s an outage, and upload metered usage numbers to headquarters, avoiding the need for someone to actually visit the meter and read it. The drawback is that Smart Meters use the 2.4GHz frequency band, as do many wireless routers and garage door openers, and in some cases can interfere with their function. READ MORE »

IBM’s Solar Power Cuts Usage 10 Percent

IBM in India has developed a special solar power system for data centers that can reduce their (often enormous) power usage by 10 percent. The system increases efficiency by reducing losses that usually result from converting alternating current on the grid to direct current for servers, explains Kota Murali, who normally works in nanotechnology at IBM India, but created this pilot on the side. Cisco Cutting 14 Percent of Workforce

Cisco Systems announced Monday it would eliminate 14 percent of its workforce, or 11,500 jobs. Of those, 6,500 jobs will be eliminated in a general downsizing, while 5,000 more will be off Cisco’s payroll when the company sells its set-top plant in Mexico to Foxconn.
