College Interns: Brilliant and Cheap

Posted by Curt Finch at 3:09 PM

Here in Austin we have the luxury of proximity to the
University of Texas (UT). From this well of intellect
we continually draw for ideas and young energetic labor.
It is a well that never runs dry.

When I started Journyx, we were always broke. We hired
one young lady, Sarah, who was working on her masters in
marketing and she worked for us for years very cheaply
creating our website, testing our software, writing our
documentation. She was awesome.

We've certainly had our duds. But internships don't have
to last that long. You only ask them to stick around
longer if they're adding value.

Since we're a technology company and UT has a software
area, we hire IT people, developers and we get to try them
for a long time at a reduced price before we eventually
decide they fit in and we hire them. If they choose to
leave they usually walk out with a recommendation letter
that is truly a door opener. If they stay, we know what
we're buying.

If you're reading this you probably have technology issues
in your company. I'll bet you have a college nearby.
Do they have a job board online? Do you know how to
contact the professors there and ask them who's the best?

I was writing software in 10th grade and tried to get
local internships but the business owners all said I was
too young and inexperienced. In retrospect I think they
made a mistake. I could have done more than they realized
for very little money.

We've had alot of marketing interns. Recently we scored
a huge victory with an intern from the UT law school.

It turns out that they don't just let anyone into the UT
law school, just the really smart ones.

She redid all of our contracts, clickthrough licenses,
and just about everything else legal about our company
for about 30 times less than a lawyer would have charged.

I'm very happy now.

I suggest you try this.
