
As Black Friday marched into Small Business Saturday, shoppers continued to brave huge crowds and long lines to score good deals on holiday shopping. And as reports file in from big box retailers it appears that larger—and younger—crowds turned out for one of the biggest sales days of the year.
This year many retailers open their doors earlier than ever—a fact which could have contributed to the impression by some that many shoppers were younger than those from previous years. Toys R Us opened at 9 p.m. Thursday, followed by Wal-Mart at 10 p.m. Then, at midnight, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohl’s all opened their doors.
In addition to hordes of first-timers, hard-core Black Friday shoppers also turned out with carefully devised plans.
There were a few violent incidents across the country, including a report of gunfire at the Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville, N.C., a fight at a Walmart jewelry counter in Kissimmee, Fla., and an incident during which someone pepper sprayed more than a dozen people at a Walmart in Porter Ranch, Calif.
