Earlier this month, Google launched its Gmail app for iOS devices. It wasn’t exactly met with a round of applause. There were few of the powerful features users get with regular Gmail, notifications weren’t working correctly, and the app crashed so often that Google finally pulled it from the Apple Store.
In its review, TheNextWeb took note of all the problems, but added a philosophical note: “Don’t be surprised if the app turns out to be good after its first update – after all, install base, performance and stability are a first iteration’s concern with apps.”
Well, that first update is here, and Gmail for iOS is not much better. Crashes are less frequent and notifications work now, but they’re still substantially slower than they should be. This time, TNW is much less amused.
Even if the app worked perfectly, one other question remains: Why is having the app any better than simply using the mobile device’s browser to access Gmail? The answer: It isn’t.
