If you’ve been toting around two smartphones, one for work and one for your personal life, you might be able to ditch one of them using a “phone-in-a-phone” platform that will soon come to market. The VMware Horizon Mobile solution lets you run both work and personal mobile environments separately on the same device. This means two phone numbers and data accounts on the same smartphone with the work environment entirely encrypted and meeting your business IT security requirements while the personal side is open, allowing you engage in online activity to your heart’s content.

In fact, in this platform the personal phone is dominant and merely includes an icon on the main screen that bridges to the work phone. The work interface takes up less than 1GB of space and allows for a corporate app store managed by your IT department that can push pre-approved apps such as Salesforce or other business-related tools.

Although VMware Horizon Mobile hasn’t been released yet, VMware says it will be working with mobile OEMs to make devices enterprise-ready so that end users can buy whatever device they like, and then the IT department can issue the virtual work phone over-the-air. The company says its technology should work on any mobile device on any operating system when it becomes available.
