
Pandora’s CTO Tom Conrad just revealed a surprising bit of news: Each year, more than half of the U.S. pays nothing for music. Zip. Zero…you get the picture. Pandora wants to change that.
With increasing competition in the space from the likes of Spotify, Rdio, and several others, comes millions of opportunities to monetize these services. How each company views itself—the future of radio vs. the future of the record store—will become much more important. Conrad says Pandora will focus on the non-paying segment of the market with advertisements.
And while Pandora might differentiate itself from Spotify in terms of its focus, there’s nothing to suggest that Spotify couldn’t just augment its service with a personalized radio.
