How Not to Name Your Tech Product

Here’s a simple marketing tip: If you’re going to create a new MP3 player, don’t call it something that sounds outlandishly racist. The German company TrekStor learned that lesson the hard way [1] after launching the spectularly badly named iBeat Blaxx. It also earned the top spot on TechRepublic’s list of the 20 worst-named technology products of all time.

Some don’t quite seem to have names at all, like the Samsung : ) (yup, the smiley icon is actually the name of the phone [2]) and the Pentax *ist [3]. (Huh?) Others have unfortunate phonetics, such as the iBeat Blaxx and the Tivoli iYiYi (TR’s comment [4]: “Oy vey.”)

Then there’s Qwikster [5]. As the TR editors admit, it’s a bit hard to differentiate in this case between a bad name and an even worse idea, but both were pretty lame.
