On Thursday, Apple stores worldwide will get a radical makeover [1], in conjunction with Apple’s new Apple Store app. First, customers who order Apple products online will be able to pick them up at an Apple store within 12 minutes of completing the order. Since they’ll have already paid online, they can simply sign for the item and walk out with it, bypassing lines and cash registers.
If they order a custom item or one not in stock at the store of their choice, the item will be shipped to the store, and buyers will get a notification via the app when the item arrives. Again, they’ll be able to pick it up 12 minutes later. Shipping to an Apple store is always free, by the way.
Even shoppers who don’t order online will be able to avoid waiting around for sales assistance or standing in line at a cash register. Instead, they can reportedly scan an item’s bar code with their iPhones, and then walk on out the door with it.
