Internet Video Streaming Now on Par with Cable TV

Users are abandoning basic cable service for Netflix.

My husband and I decided a couple of years ago that we’d rather skip paying the monthly cable bill in favor of Netflix and other streaming content. Seems like we’re not the only ones. A new survey (in PDF) shows how streaming is growing dramatically, with Netflix alone outpacing the rest of Web usage, at least in terms of bandwidth.

A while ago, we noted how the cable companies just don’t seem to get it, statistics like these may serve as a wakeup call to that industry. Meantime, the survey also demonstrates how far we’ve come into the Post-PC era: 55 percent of real-time entertainment traffic goes to a mobile or gaming device, smart TV, or set top box such as Roku.
