VC: Despite Economy Web and Mobile Have Bright Future

The global economy looks bad, but this is still a time of great growth for Internet and mobile Internet companies, according to Mary Meeker, partner at the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, she laid out some facts [1] that provide an interesting glimpse into the future. Consider:

  • U.S. use of social networks is low, relatively speaking. Israelis and Argentines spend the most time on these sites.
  • 24 percent of trade crosses international borders, compared with 10 percent in the 1960s.
  • Only 80 percent of the world’s population has access to an electrical grid–but 85 percent has mobile coverage.
