Google May Own Motorola but It Won’t Get Special Treatment

Google may own Motorola, but it will think of it as just another handset company. That’s the word from Android chief Andy Rubin who told [1] AllThingsD, “This is going to be an arm’s-length thing…Motorola isn’t going to get any special treatment.” To which we can only say…huh? The whole point of an acquisition is to exploit synergies between two companies. If your plan is to run them as two completely separate companies, that would seem to miss the whole point of having made the acquisition in the first place.

On the other hand, Google owning a handset company would seem to raise anti-trust issues, so Rubin may just be saying what the Justice Department wants to hear. Stay tuned.
