Google Launches 3D Maps With “Swooping” View of Buildings

If Google Maps seems a bit two-dimensional, consider trying [1] the new MapsGL [2] option. That gives you a transparent view of buildings on the ground, and other features such as shadows appropriate to the time of day, and the ability to “swoop” down to street view. It’s based on 3D web technology called WebGL that was started by the Mozilla Foundation and works on the newest and/or beta versions of four of the top five browsers, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. The holdout–big surprise–is Microsoft Internet Explorer. It also works on Google Maps on Android, by the way.
