The company’s manufacturing partner, Quanta, recently laid off 1,000 production workers and reports have circulated that RIM has had some trouble moving inventory. More recently, three major retailers slashed prices on the PlayBook by up to $200, further fueling rumors. RIM has said the price drop is part of a “promotional” plan. John Vinh, an analyst at Collins Stewart says their research shows production has “halted” and RIM has “canceled development of additional tablet projects.” A RIM spokesperson dismissed Vinh’s statement in an email response.
Well, one thing is certain: if the company doesn’t kill off the product line, speculation just might.
