RIM Reportedly Ready to Ditch PlayBook

Should we stay or should we go? These days that’s the big question for RIM [1]. The company is reportedly considering a quick exit from the tablet market after a rocky (non)start with the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The company’s manufacturing partner, Quanta, recently laid off [2]1,000 production workers and reports have circulated that RIM has had some trouble moving inventory. More recently, three major retailers slashed prices [3] on the PlayBook by up to $200, further fueling rumors. RIM has said the price drop is part of a “promotional” plan. John Vinh, an analyst at Collins Stewart says their research shows production has “halted” and RIM has “canceled development of additional tablet projects.” A RIM spokesperson dismissed Vinh’s statement in an email response.
Well, one thing is certain: if the company doesn’t kill off the product line, speculation just might.
