Is Amazon Silk Coming to a Mobile Device Near You?

“It’ll seem like a traditional browser, just a lot better and a lot faster.” That’s the bold claim for Amazon Silk, the new browser currently available nowhere, to be released exclusively on Amazon’s new Kindle Fire tablet [1] coming in November.
Why do you need a new browser? Amazon claims it will use the power [2] of its mighty cloud to assemble everything you need to load a Web page in one place (so you’re not loading, say, text from one server, graphics from another, and advertising from a third) and that it will also use observe your browsing behavior to guess which page you’re headed to next and begin pre-loading it, much as Google Instant [3] does with search results.
If true, Silk may soon be speeding the browsing experience for more than just Kindle Fire users. CNET‘s Stephen Shankland observed [4] Thursday that Amazon has reserved a pile of domain names that indicate future non-Fire uses: silkformac, silkforpc, silkforwindows, and silkfortablets. And that’s not all. Silk’s terms and conditions [5] tells users that Amazon will collect information from the browsers crash reports when used on a Kindle and adds, “You may choose to send these reports when using Amazon Silk on other devices.”
Stay tuned.
