
Flickr has built an Android application for mobile photographers. The company has had an iOS app for years, but the Android version includes several new features, including photo filters. The app also has easy topic and location tagging, slideshows, and photo sharing.
The debut of Flickr’s Android app may be a shot over the bow of Instagram, the photo app developer that has boasted of signing up one user per second in recent months.
Flickr’s owner Yahoo has said it is making mobile and social software development a priority. “It is a strategic direction for us and we are committed to being a player, a bigger player than we are today, in the mobile space,” Yahoo vice president Steve Douty told reporters. Douty said that Yahoo has 680 million global visitors per month, and that the company plans to make use of the data provided by those visitors.
