Now that the long-anticipated Kindle Fire has been announced at a tempting price point of $199, big-box retailers are chopping prices of the ailing BlackBerry PlayBook. Earlier this week Staples and Office Depot began running PlayBook sales promotions and on Wednesday Best Buy began selling all models of the tablet with a hefty $200 discount.
That means RIM’s 16GB model is now $299, the 32GB model is $399, and the 64GB model is $499. Unlike Staples and Office Depot’s promotions, Best Buy’s sale is a straight discount, not a mail-in rebate.
According to BGR, RIM has recently said that “the official retail price of BlackBerry PlayBook has not changed,” and that they have struck promotional deals with retailers that are intended to drive PlayBook sales during the fall season.
If you want one at the reduced price, you may want to hurry: the 16GB model is already backordered on BestBuy.com.
