Apple Tries and (Thankfully) Fails to Patent the Term “Multi-Touch”

Remember Apple, the company that sued [1] Samsung for selling a tablet that is…tablet-shaped? Amazingly, Apple apparently believes no other company has the right to sell anything that looks like a tablet. Even more amazing, the suit succeeded in barring the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Germany.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that a company that believes the whole concept of a tablet belongs only to them would also feel the same way about the multiple-touch touchscreen. Or at least term we all use for it. Back in 2007 it filed an application to trademark the term “multi-touch.” It may have taken them until now to decide, but fortunately the U.S. Patent Office has said no.
