Dish Network Challenges Netflix With New Blockbuster Video Stream

Dish Network [1] aimed a shot directly at rival Netflix [2] today when it announced Blockbuster [3]‘s new Movie Pass, a bundle that includes streaming video, DVDS, Blu-Rays, games — all for $10 a month. There’s a catch though. To take advantage of the new package and its low pricing, you must be a Dish Network customer. It’s a pretty gutsy play. Not only could Dish Network end up with more cable subscribers, but it also sends a signal that it mean serious competition for Netflix. The timing is spot-on. Netflix has taken a lot of heat lately, for its management fumble [4] and its 60-percent price increase [5]. Now Dish Network might draw a few users away.

Movie Pass will launch Saturday. Before this, Blockbuster only offered on-demand online movie rentals, and the price was expensive: $3.99 per rental. That’s pretty expensive if you’re set on re-watching Season 3 of Lost.
