New E-Store Offers Spare Parts for Building Apps

Need to build an app? Now there’s a market for that. Appcelerator [1]launched its Open Mobile Marketplace today, a forum that includes mobile-app modules, templates, design elements, cloud extensions, and other parts that will send developers into an excited frenzy. From PayPal [2]and Salesforce [3]to Dropbox [4]and Bump [5], a variety of sellers have made their digital wares available. The market offers both free and paid goods, and revenue is split the standard 70-30 between sellers and the store. And some big-name customers have already started shopping, including NBC [6], eBay [7], Kellogg’s [8], and GameStop [9]. “We felt it was important to establish the demand for a marketplace first, much like Salesforce did before AppExchange [10] and Facebook [11]before it opened up its API,” says Scott Schwarzhoff, Appecelerator’s marketing vice-president.
The Open Mobile Marketplace is also designed to complement with Appcelerator’s own mobile-publishing app. (Lesson learned: Never forget about your own interests.)
