Somewhere in the New Mexico desert, a 20-square mile town will soon appear, built entirely from scratch. It could house up to 35,000 people. If anyone planned to live there.The town will remain empty, existing solely as a playground for scientists, innovators, and businesses to test out new technology and products. It will cost Pegasus Global Holdings ^[1], a Washington, D.C.-based technology firm, $200 million to build The Center, the nickname it picked for the project. At the site, the company plans to test every sort of technology. Renewable energy, intelligent traffic systems, wireless networks, and smart-grid cyber security systems could all wind up in Beta testing there.

Pegasus CEO Bob Brumley hopes The Center will transform Northwest New Mexico into a latter-day Silicon Valley. Area 51 jokes aside, the state already boasts plenty of universities, federal labs, and military installations. The Center could create up to 3,5000 jobs by the end, Brumley says. Pegasus and New Mexico have already been working on the project for about 18 months, but no ground-breaking date surfaced in early reports.

Anyways, mining ghost-towns were so last century.
