A group of computer geeks may decide at least a bit of TV’s future in a 24 hour period this coming weekend. The event, Hackday.tv ^[1], will take place at innovation playground General Assembly ^[1], and teams of developers will have a day to whip up new TV-based applications. They’ll get access to APIs from a several existing TV start-ups and other related programs.

With hackathons’ in-vogue status ^[2]right now, Shelby.tv ^[3]‘s founders decided to put this one together in hopes of encouraging some innovative features, inspired in part by the recent Photo Hack Day ^[4] in New York. The event’s organizers would like to developers to focus on drafting the basic shape of a program that could see later development, productizing, and monetizing.

Winners will receive cash prizes, and the grand-prize winner will have their application featured on a Times Square jumbotron, thanks to Hackday.tv’s sponsor, Nasdaq ^[5]. We expect that at least some of TV’s future might focus on big-screen technology, but probably nothing as large as a jumbotron.
