Chatter.com [1] exists for the generation of business folks more comfortable with GoogleDocs [2] and Facebook [3] than internal memos. Its works and looks like a cross between the big three social networks, Twitter [4], Facebook, and Google+ [5], and with its latest redesign, hopes to attract more users.

The new Chatter has a number of new features. First, there’s Chatter Now, a real-time chat function that will let colleagues instant message each other, see who’s online, and share their screen. Next, new Chatter will let you invite clients into the network with an email invitation and control what functions they can use. Finally, there is also a fancy new HTML5 mobile app.

Chatter’s parent company, Salesforce.com [6], announced the Chatter’s creation back in 2009, and the website went beta in June 2010. Salesforce has said Chatter is its most successful product launch, and it even spent millions on a Super Bowl ad for it. While Chatter executives say it was a no-brainer to move the business world toward social-networking programs, they must also realize they are entering a market worth more than $1 billion in revenue. Now that’s a realization worthy of a memo.
