Walmart’s retail dominance may soon stretch beyond its white-and-blue tiled floors.Four months ago, Walmart bought start-up Kosmix for $300 million for its social-media savvy — and technology. Kosmix had already designed a web platform, Social Genome, that organizes social-media data. Social Genome housed three features Tweet Beat, a social-media filter; topic-based search engine Kosmix.com; and Right Health, a search portal. Now if you type TweetBeat and Kosmix into your URL bar, it redirects you to WalmartLabs.
WalmartLabs’ tagline? “Social + Mobile + Retail.” Walmart plans to move toward pushing its advertisements and sales information over social networks like Twitter and Facebook. Kosmix will also help it reinvent its website, which lags behind Amazon in terms of e-sales.
