Socialcam to Spin Off From Justin.tv

Justin.tv, an online video start-up best known for its live-streaming services, will be spinning off its Socialcam application [1]. The app for sharing videos was launched after the company noticed last year that many users of the Justin.tv mobile app were watching videos on demand.

“It’s fairly common knowledge that a start-up can’t execute on two products simultaneously,” Michael Seibel, CEO of Justin.tv, told reporters. Seibel will be turning over the reins at Justin.tv and stepping in as CEO of the independent Socialcam. “The big entrenched players don’t do what we do well,” he says. “People are carrying around smartphones. They have a video capture device in their pockets 24-7. But they don’t have an easy way to take videos and share them with friends.”

Facebook, Youtube, and Apple are the main players in mobile video sharing, Seibel says. But he contends that the companies’ platforms are ill-suited to the demands of most smartphone users, and that he thinks Socialcam can better serve the market.

Seibel will be replaced at Justin.tv by Emmet Shear, former Justin.tv CTO. The company is currently developing a product called TwitchTV, a site for video gamers.
