Apple Includes Earthquake-Warning Widget in Japanese iOS5

Connects devices with Japan's national early-warning system.

Apple is introducing a special earthquake early-warning widget in the Japanese version of its iOS. The notification system is new to Apple devices, but not to Japanese citizens. The country introduced an earthquake notification system in 2007. The system proved its worth by notifying Japanese after the country was struck by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake in March.

Users of the iPhone were able to receive notifications from the system before, but they had to download an application from a third party. One drawback to the widget may be that, because it receives a constant stream of information from monitoring stations, it may decrease a device’s battery life.
