HTC Buys Controlling Interest in Beats Electronics

The move looks to be part of HTC's innovation strategy in the handset space.

To be frank, HTC didn’t need to buy Dr. Dre’s company, Beats Electronics, to earn street cred—the company has already built a strong reputation for its smartphones. But the company will acquire 51 percent controlling of Beats for $309 million. What’s behind the acquisition?

Beats, which makes high-end speakers and headphones, also has proprietary audio technology that those in the music industry—and out—swear by. Expect to see that technology make it onto future HTC handsets. When combined with the launch of the first Android phone, the first 3D phone, and the first 4G phone in the U.S., this acquisition is a way for HTC to continue innovation in the highly competitive mobile space.
