Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research are working on technology that could change the motion picture and gaming industries. The development team is looking to turn motion capture inside out—literally.
Motion capture, the process of turning real-life actors and their movements into digitized format for CGI, is now a mainstay in Hollywood and game design notes Wired.com’s Mark Brown. Using a process called “structure from motion,” researchers propose that rather than have multiple cameras directed at an actor, directors simply flip the script and have the actor wear 20 small cameras on his or her body. Computer algorithms then collect the filmed data and build a character from the inside out (skeleton, limbs, etc.).
Right now, all this is taking place in the lab. Researchers still have to figure out how to make it work in the real world—or Hollywood’s rendition of it.
