Zugara, a developer of online augmented reality software, has partnered with online clothing retailer Banana Flame in the latest e-commerce attempt to make online shopping seem like shopping in a store. With the help of a webcam, Zugara’s software creates a visual simulation of what the clothes may look like on a customer.

The software uses technology similar to that of Microsoft Kinect to allow users to position a virtual garment on the image of his or her body. Shoppers can also navigate color choices and other options with arm movements.

The software is not able, of course, to simulate the cut, hang, or texture of an item of clothing. Users have reported technically difficulties, as well, particularly involving Flash performance on Macs. Yet, it is perhaps one of the first attempts to use augmented reality technology to improve e-commerce.
