Android Takes Top Spot for Smartphone Carriers in Second Quarter

In the second quarter, Google Android [1] captured almost 50 percent of the smartphone market to hit a new record, according to a report [2] by Canalys [3], a market research firm.

Android had the most smartphone shipments in the second quarter, reaching 51.9 million units shipped — a 379 percent increase since last year. Of the 56 countries in Canalys’ study, Android led in the markets of 35.

Apple [4] performed well in Canalys’ report, rising to second place over Nokia [5]‘s Symbian platform. Apple shipped 20.3 million iPhones and had 19 percent of the market share.

Overall, the report found that the smartphone market grew 73 percent since last year with 107.7 million units shipping in the second quarter.
