LinkedIn CEO Says No One Has Time to Use Google+

Twitter is for sharing short snippets, Facebook is for friends and family and LinkedIn is for business. Does anybody have time for another time-suck? Jeff Weiner thinks not.

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner is getting quoted all over the place for dissing Google+, effectively saying that nobody has time for another social network. Speaking at an event, Weiner was asked whether Google+ could coexist with Facebook, Twitter and his own LinkedIn, reports Business Insider.

Weiner says Twitter is for “microcasting” short snippets of information, Facebook is for communicating with family and friends and LinkedIn is for a person’s professional life. That triad doesn’t leave much room for Google+, he argues. “You introduce Google+, where am I going to spend that next minute or hour of my discretionary time? I have no more time.”

According to TG Daily’s Mark Raby, “Weiner is neglecting the face that monopolies, even ones like Facebook, can be broken. In a recent customer satisfaction survey from ForeSee Results, Facebook ranked last among all website in the Social Media category, which included other sites like Youtube, Wikipedia, Twitter, and Myspace. Facebook scored a 66 out of a possible 100, which isn’t terrible but it certainly leaves room for someone to swoop in and bring some healthy competition to the table.”

According to SlashGear’s Chris Davies, Weiner’s perspective differs from MySpace founder Tom Anderson’s opinion of Google+ which was generally positive.

Update 12:09 p.m. EST, July 25, 2011: According to LinkedIn, the Business Insider quote used as the basis for this story isn’t entirely accurate. In fact, its PR firm says “overall Jeff is complimentary of Google.” Want to judge for yourself? Here’s video of Weiner’s comments at a Churchill Club event last week in which he discusses Google Plus and other social platforms.

To say Tom Anderson’s opinion was “generally positive” is like saying that people “generally have eyes.”

It’s no less boring than facebook is.  Your friends just aren’t on G+ yet. I, for one, am going to wait until it’s opened to the public before I pass judgement.

MySpace never appealed to people’s common denominator. Rather than allowing people to focus on relationships, it became a popularity contest. Facebook ranked last in social networking because it’s becoming just as pointless.

Zuck is great at creating useless ways for people to waste times: playing games, looking through hundreds of third degree acquaintances they met once at a party ten years earlier, replying to comments, etc. No, Facebook isn’t the social media contest Tila Tequila quickly won, but it’s becoming just as pointless.

Google+ will survive, as long as it maintains its minimalist design and allows people to segregate (I mean that in the denotative way) their on-line conversations and relationships.

Yeah, and who needs Word when we have WordPerfect?

I think Weiner sense a possible threat to Linkedln… it’s undeniable any kind of shift in dynamic regarding social networking could pose a possible threat to his website. Google + appears to be more of a competitor to Facebook than other social media sites, but Google is in a state of expansion that may spill over into Weiner’s  domain of “professional life”.

Yeah the time might be limited but who isi to say that the limited time is spent on Facebook and your website and not on google+. As a web pioneer you ought to know better than making ridiculous statement like that. Web trends shift. I might just shift away from your overvalued website to something else and that something might just be google+.

Don’t have time for another social network tool? You already have 3 that fulfill all your needs?

Well, get more time by using Google+ as the only social network, since its privacy abilities (circles) give you the ability to have all three social networks web sites you use today – in one web site.

I know there’ll be plenty who disagree with this but this is my view entirely. My Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles all work effectively and reflect my ‘offline’ life perfectly.

I like G+ and am making time for it. While I agree with Weiner on how we use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, I’m connecting with some really great people on G+ that I might not reach as easily on the other sites. Maybe it’s because we’re early adopters to it right now. It’s not terribly crowded. Time will tell.

The Hangout (group video chat) is a really great tool with so much potential. Singer/Songwriter Daria Musk is making waves right now as the first musician to hold a live Hangout for fans, playing for 7.5 hours. It was also on Livestream since Hangouts are limited to 10 people. I watched in amazement as she used G+ to connect with thousands of fans. I wrote an article about it last week, http://bit.ly/rbAydO. I’m interviewing her now about her experience and the attention she’s getting for her music using G+. I’m hearing companies are using Hangouts to chat with customers. It’s a great feature and works quite well.

I’ll be eagerly watching as this becomes, in my opinion, our next mainstream social engagement site.
