Google+: The Missing Features

Posted By Minda Zetlin On July 14, 2011 @ 12:22 pm In Blogging and Social Media,Internet and Online Business | 5 Comments

Now that Google+ apparently has 1o million users [1] (and doubling soon), some of them are letting the world know what features they’d like to see added or changed. Here are some of the top requested.

Better circle management for those with many contacts. For the moment, most of us have manageable numbers of Google+ contacts, but those who arrive wanting to add 100 or more to their circles wish [2] this could be done more than one contact at a time, and also that the display would easily show more than 29 per circle.

Integration. With other Google products, such as Documents and Calendar (probably coming at some point), with other social media, with developers who want an API so they can add apps. Of course, most of those apps would be games, and I at least find the absence of games on Google+, as compared to Facebook, something of a relief. There is also no way to advertise, which again might be a good or bad thing, depending on your point of view.

The ability to exclude circles from posts. That’s right, exclude. If you have half a dozen circles including business contacts, colleagues at your company, your local media and so on, you might want to make sure they get all the announcements about your newest product. Not so much your 80-year-old great aunt. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could exclude her and other family members?

Clearer messaging. Even Twitter, no one’s idea of a feature-rich application, lets you send direct messages to your contacts. In Google+, there’s no clear way to do this, other than creating a one-person circle and then sharing to that circle (what a pain!) or else starting a chat, which you may not want to do if you don’t want to interrupt someone’s work day.
