Dropbox Earns Massive Valuation Topping $5 Billion

Reports say Dropbox's latest funding round gives it equal financial footing with Twitter.

If news of Dropbox‘s latest funding round is true, the cloud storage service has achieved the same overall valuation as Twitter. According to TechCrunch, DropBox is raising between $200 million and $300 million in its latest round of funding, which would place the company’s valuation in the $5 billion to $10 billion range.

This is a huge jump from the company’s most recent valuation last November, when Dropbox was valued at just $7 million.

Dropbox has plenty going for it. The popular San Francisco start-up, known for its user-friendly service that backs up and synchronizes files over the cloud, serves more than 25 million registered users and recently reached a deal to pre-load its Android app on Sony Ericsson phones that run Softbank, Japan’s third largest wireless carrier.

This is a very competitive market; there are several other services that do a much better job than Dropbox like SugarSync.  This is a ridiculous valuation if true.

gotta say I agree with @twitter-17412621:disqus  this valuation is nuts. Maybe if the owners want to get out at the right time with a valuation like that it could be the “right” time now…

@twitter-17412621:disqus This has never been about creating the best services. It takes much more than that. Off course, not saying we shouldn’t prefer better services.
