
Apple’s iOS App Store, which houses 425,000 free and paid applications for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, has achieved 15 billion app downloads, the company announced yesterday.
What’s most surprising is the increasing velocity of these downloads. According to ComputerWorld, the App Store has recently averaged about one billion downloads per month—the equivalent of 23,148 apps per minute—and that number is only rising. Apple had 10 billion App Store downloads in January, and experts believe that at the present trajectory, Apple could easily achieve 20 billion downloads by Christmas.
Apple pioneered the App Store by making it a key feature of the iPhone in 2008, tempting developers with its clear-cut revenue sharing (developers get 70 percent of app purchases; Apple gets 30 percent).
