
For the fourth consecutive year, European Union countries plan to lower roaming charges within their borders. The roaming charge for calls within the EU was set on Friday to decrease from 39 cents a minute to 35 cents a minute. The EU first began capping roaming charges in July of 2007.
Neelie Kroes, European commissioner for telecommunications, said that she will also give thought to placing the first caps on data plan prices. The European Commission will wait until Wednesday to announce its new caps. The Commission hopes to reduce roaming charges until they are nearly the same as regular mobile telecommunications charges.
