Groupon Now! Spreads to NYC

Daily deals website Groupon has finally expanded it’s new, hyperlocal deals section Groupon Now! to New York City. IncTech reported the launch of the service in the company’s home city of Chicago in May [1], and now the Big Apple can get in on immediate, real-time deals from local places on Groupon’s website and mobile app.

Groupon Now! is essentially a webpage with a large map of a city that invites you to put in a zip code and an activity of choice, ranging from local food to spa services. The map then sprouts deals in order of proximity to your entered location and preferences that are similar to the daily deals Groupon already provides. Near the Inc offices, there is a deal for 50% off a local pizza truck, 25% off a walking tour, and 40% off admission to a local spa.

However, there is a catch: a deal is only valid for the day it is purchased, often between a small window of time. A user can have all day to use a particular deal, and only 45 minutes to redeem a another. This aspect of Groupon Now! makes the satisfaction immediate, but also can increase stress. There is no penalty if the deal isn’t used, however, and Groupon promises a refund if a deal isn’t used within the time limit.

NYC: Try Groupon Now! on the the company’s website [2], or download the Groupon App from the iTunes, Android, or Blackberry Marketplace.
