Anonymous RIM Executive Airs Company Laundry

Research in Motion [1] (RIM) sure knows drama. Just a day after a “high level executive” submitted an anonymous letter to Boy Genius Report, the company responded with its own statement. Now RIM says it will consider splitting the roles of Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, who serve as co-CEO and Chairman. The news comes ahead of the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting.
The executive’s letter [2] pleaded with management to make drastic changes to set the Blackberry-maker’s ship right. They include focusing on end-user experience, recruiting top talent, developing devices that users want, and executing effective marketing strategies.
As expected, RIM went on the defensive [3], saying the company is “thankfully in a solid business and financial position” and has a “solid balance sheet.” Given the unnamed executive’s concerns—and RIM’s position in the marketplace—the response sounds shaky.
