What if you could simply walk into any movie theater, flash your smart phone, and enjoy any movie of your choosing? MoviePass [1], a Northern California-based company, aims to revolutionize the theater-going experience the same way Netflix changed the DVD rental game: Unlimited movies in any theater for a flat rate of $50 a month.
Users will be able to handle their movie schedule via an HTML5 application or a smart phone app, which will generate a special code to be redeemed at participating theaters. For the casual movie-goer, MoviePass will also offer a “lite” package of four movies to be redeemed at any time within the month for $30. Any 3D or IMAX tickets will cost an extra $3 per movie, and will pay the difference at the ticket counter.
A private beta is currently underway in the San Jose area, and will roll out to other cities throughout the summer. MoviePass plans to offer access to 40% of the nation’s movie screens by formal launch in the fall.
