Grandparents Using Social Networks More

If you haven’t called your grandmother lately, chances are she may come after you on Facebook. A new study by MyVoucherCodes suggests one-fifth of all grandparents are using a social network. Not surprisingly, the study also showed that the majority of these social seniors are on Facebook—71% to be exact—with 34% on Twitter, and 9% on LinkedIn.

The study, which surveyed 1,341 grandparents from the UK, revealed that the majority of grandparents had joined their chosen social network in the past year and use the platforms quite frequently. According to the survey, 51% log in once a week or more, and 35% log in a few times every month.

“I think it’s quite a common misconception nowadays that the over- 60s aren’t as savvy as others when it comes to the Internet,” says Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes. “Anyone would love to see their grandparents online, although some grandchildren may want to censor what they say on sites with this in mind.”

Previous studies have hinted at the growing popularity of social networks among the elderly. A Pew report showed that the number of older adults had nearly doubled in 2010, and another report from eMarketer similarly revealed that the number of baby boomers and seniors on Facebook jumped drastically between 2008 and 2009.
