Tumblr Surpasses WordPress

Exactly one week ago, we reported [1] that WordPress.com was leading Tumblr in blogs hosted by about 1.6 million, but that the gap was closing quickly. Tumblr wasted no time, officially passing WordPress.com yesterday to claim the blog hosting crown.
Created in 2003, WordPress.com has long hosted sites for brands such as the National Football League, TED, and CNN; in comparison, 4-year-old Tumblr only had about 7 million total blogs in January. What changed? Tumblr got hot after several top companies in entertainment, news, and fashion launched Tumblr blog
s as another form of social media presence, boosting its popularity and inspiring millions of individuals to launch Tumblr blogs of their own.
