Exactly one week ago, we reported that WordPress.com was leading Tumblr in blogs hosted by about 1.6 million, but that the gap was closing quickly. Tumblr wasted no time, officially passing WordPress.com yesterday to claim the blog hosting crown.

Created in 2003, WordPress.com has long hosted sites for brands such as the National Football League, TED, and CNN; in comparison, 4-year-old Tumblr only had about 7 million total blogs in January. What changed? Tumblr got hot after several top companies in entertainment, news, and fashion launched Tumblr blog

s as another form of social media presence, boosting its popularity and inspiring millions of individuals to launch Tumblr blogs of their own.

Wow!  I’ve been a loyal WordPress user for years now.  I’ve used Tumblr a few times, but this certainly begs some additional attention.  Very impressive run for Tumblr.

It seems this its only counting WordPress.com and not the hosted version. WordPress.org sites (the hosted version) I’m sure is still the king of blog software and perhaps even CMS’s. Tumblr is sure good at what it does do though.

    Cross-posted from Mashable:

Ian Stewart (http://themeshaper.com) head of the WordPress Theme Team just presented at FoWD2011 and said that 14% of the web is WordPress powered. He got the stat here –http://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/content_management/all Doesn’t break down self installed vs. hosted, but that is a pretty significant number in any case.

Count the WP do org downloaded sites plus the wp dot come sites and you get nearly 57 bazillion actual, working blog sites with hundreds or thousands of posts by now. Good effort Tumblr, but you’ve got a ways to go!

Total misinformation and Tumblr hype. Add the estimated WP dot com installs and the WP dot org downloaded and self-hosted sites world-wide and you have nearly 57 bazillion (with a “z”) actual WP sites online. Good effort, Tumblr, but not quite there yet when it comes to surpassing the world’s most popular content management system today.

Good for Tumblr. Will never replace WP and I doubt that’s their goal. Two different platforms. I see Tumblr more content curation, WP content creation. I love them both :)

I have always used WordPress and so do many Dentists.  Looks like the Dentist needs to start using Tumblr.

Way more WP installs than Tublr users in my opinion
