Social Sites Reach New Heights

Social networking sites are on the rise, but it’s the rate of this growth that is most surprising. In the last year alone, social networking use increased by 25 percent, and a new report from web analytics firm comScore says the average online user now spends one out of every six minutes on social sites.
Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and Twitter all hit record highs in May, but Facebook’s dominance is mostly responsible for this trend: Facebook reaches 73 percent of the U.S. Internet population each month, garnering 157.2 million visitors in May alone. The recent string of successful IPOs have also inspired excitement around social media, with LinkedIn and Pandora getting a chance to boost their share prices in response to heightened demand.
