Tumblr Poised to Pass WordPress

The latest numbers show WordPress.com hosts more blogs than Tumblr, but that will change "very soon."

Popular blogging platform WordPress is quickly closing in on the 20 million hosted blogs mark, but the company shouldn’t celebrate just yet. One of its prime competitors, New York-based social blogging platform Tumblr, is closing in on WordPress with 18.4 million total hosted blogs of its own. According to Crenk, Tumblr will overtake WordPress “very soon.”

Many flock to Tumblr for its design flexibility, its ability to host rich media, its e-mail-or-text-based publishing system, and its seamless connectivity with Twitter and Facebook.

This isn’t quite a straight comparison as the self-hosted version of WordPress has several advantages which means a reasonable number of people move from the hosted to self-hosted version with time, and therefore, WordPress.com isn’t the whole picture…

I concur. The majority of WordPress-hosted websites that I visit (and know is hosted by WP) are self-hosted.

I would have to agree with the other comments so far and even extend that  to say the entire headline and post is misleading. The post uses the term WordPress (the platform) mostly, only once referencing the WordPress.com (the service) in the description. Additionally the source post is kind of stale being from May 11, 2011 and also not consistent in terminology.

I have no numbers to check off hand but just the number of WordPress installations likely hosted by a large company such as Go Daddy alone would probably widen the gab substantially.

It is Quite Intersting to see that Tumblr overshadowed wordpress. There is no doubt that wordpress CMS is best with adjustable customization and million of free plugins that makes your site most search engine friendly. So major Bloggers just use WP CMS. On the other hand Tumblr is quite easy and customizable comparable to wordpress.com so it could be main reason..
