You spend all day (or at least we do) using a browser—Firefox, Chrome, Safari or IE—to do most everything you do on the Web. But if you want to use the Internet to talk to someone face-to-face, you can’t use your browser to do it. You have to switch to Skype, or GoToMeeting, or some other separate application. Even Google’s own video chat client has to be downloaded before you can use it.

That could be a problem if, say, you wanted to use one of the new browser-only Chromebooks to, say, wish your kids a video goodnight while you’re on the road. And in general, the possibilities that arise from integrating live video chat directly into a website do seem pretty appealing.

In any case, Google just released WebRTC ^[1], a toolkit to let developers incorporate video chat into web applications and websites.

We can’t wait to see what they make with it.
