Mea culpa! That’s the word ^[1]from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who in an interview at the D9 Conference took responsibility for Google’s crippling lateness to the world of social media.

“I clearly knew I had to do something and I failed to do it,” he elaborated. “I screwed up.”

He added that Google had hoped to partner with Facebook, a company whose success he admires. In other unexpected commentary, he added that the “Gang of Four” most influential tech companies includes Facebook, Apple, Google, and…Amazon.

And what of the 90-pound gorilla not mentioned in that list?

Microsoft “is not driving the consumer revolution in the minds of consumers,” he said.
