If you bought an HP or Compaq laptop made in 2007 or 2008, check it against this list. HP had previously recalled 70,000 batteries in 2009 and 54,000 more in 2010, but this is its biggest recall ever.
It’s worth taking seriously. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Since the May 2010 recall expansion, HP has received 40 additional reports of batteries that overheated and ruptured, resulting in seven burn injuries, one smoke inhalation injury, and 36 instances of property damage.”
If you think you might have an affected laptop, the Commission recommends you remove the battery immediately and contact HP for a new one. This recall expands on the previous list, so even if you were told earlier that your battery was OK you should check again.
And, no, it’s not OK to just use your cooling pad.
