If you’re not inspired by the traditional directory/folder/file way of finding your data, the new iPad app Planetary may point the way toward a more visually interesting future. The new app gives users a visual guide to sorting through their music based on solar systems, in which stars are artists, planets are albums, and moons are songs.
Interesting, but without much practical purpose, you may be thinking. But Richard MacManus at ReadWriteWeb sees this as the next big thing for user interfaces. “Planetary shows how data visualizations will become the new interface to your computing experiences,” he predicts.
Bloom Studios, which created Planetary also believes it is just the beginning. In the future, the company says, similar applications will “let you explore and participate in social networks, video streaming services, and location-based applications in a whole new way.”
Zooming from planet to planet to browse your Facebook friends’ postings or your Netflix queue? Sounds like fun to us.
