Monday through Wednesday in New York City TechCrunch is holding its Disrupt Battlefield competition in which hopeful founders and entrepreneurs submit their young, unseen start-up companies for the opportunity to try winning a $50,000 prize while launching in front of an all-star panel made up of innovators, angel investors, venture capitalists and tech influencers. Tuesday featured three Battlefields: Disrupting the Real World, Disrupting the Enterprise and Disrupting Streams and Collaborations. These start-ups made presentations in the Disrupting the Real World category:
SHL Telemedicine [1] introduced “smartheart,” a personal hospital-grade electrocardiogram machine that’s slightly larger than an iPhone 4. The gadget records 30 seconds of heart readings which can be emailed to a doctor or hospital. One judge was lukewarm about the idea, saying that he doubted people would invest $500 for a device they might only use occasionally. Another thought it might be smarter to market smartheart to rural health care providers.
Avado [2] is an online tool that gives patients a way to track their vital statistics and medication, prepare for healthcare appointments and connect with healthcare providers and clinics. Health care providers, for their part, can use Avado to broadcast news to patients. One TechCrunch panelist said getting health records into the hands of patients was long overdue, but marketing “to the establishment” won’t work and should be more focused on end-users.
MotherKnows [3] is a service that gathers a child’s health records and makes them available online so parents can see a complete update health record for their child with information such as immunizations, blood type, allergies, medications, growth charts, and a full record of all doctor visits. Co-founder and Chairman Hesky Kutscher hammered the point that parents are constantly being asked about their kids’ immunization records and keeping track of them can be a pain. While the panel didn’t seem to be particularly impressed with that, as as a mother I can attest that Kutscher is right. Having that information on my iPhone would be fantastic.
Desmos [4]software is completely browser-based so it allows interactive touch screens in classroom to be accessible by more people. During its pitch, Desmos had someone in the audience using a PlayBook manipulate graphics on the screen in front of the room and also showed how the software functioned as a graphic calculator. “Texas Instruments, your monopoly on graphing in the classroom is over,” said founder Eli Luberoff.
GetAround [5] is sort of like Zipcar, but the cars are owned by regular people. The owner of Volkswagen Beetle, for example, might rent her car for $5.5o and hour or $33 a day, whereas a 2010 BMW owner could rent his to someone for around $10 an hour or $60 a day. Renters can reserve and even find their rental using an iPhone app and GetAround provides insurance for all vehicles rented through its network as well as a handy gadget that lets people into them.
