Expired Domains Pose Hacking Risk

The best way to protect yourself? Unlink your accounts from the old domain.

If you’ve let a domain or two expire, you might want to double-check those old accounts. Rip Empson at TechCrunch is reporting that expired domains could subject you to huge security risks. If an old domain is still linked to other online accounts, your personal information could be exposed, giving hackers (or just plain unscrupulous types) everything they need to wreck your life.

With more than 33 million expired domains online, this could be a virtual treasure trove. Empson details how British hacker Ben Reyes was able to access the information of a former domain owner; when Reyes tried to register the domain with Google Apps, he found out that the previous owner had tied the account to Google Apps. The reclamation process gave Reyes access to all the information a hacker would need to do serious damage–which he didn’t, of course. The moral of the story? Monitor all your domain accounts.
